- Buy Insurance - make sure you HAVE insurance. Not all situations require insurance.
- Is your coverage adequate? If you have lived in your home more than five years, it's time to update your coverage to protect your investments.
- While reviewing your policy, check policy limits on extra's such as jewelry; coins & silver. If you have any valuables, they must be on a rider to be covered over a certain dollar amount. Don't assume!
- Make sure you know what your deductibles are. Sometimes these get lost in the translation. Check hurricane & flood deductibles. Also check the amount of content coverage you have if applicable.
- Where is your policy? Keep your policy in a safe place. Know how to contact your agent or claims reporting number.
- In case of a claim - call ASAP to report any damages so they can advise you on how to proceed.
- If you can not reach someone to report a claim, take the necessary steps to prevent any further damage or loss. Document losses by taking pictures! Any materials purchased for prevention, such as a tarp to cover roof damage, are all reimbursable expenses. Keep receipts.
- Take preventative measures before any loss occurs! Take pictures or video of contents of your home and keep in a safe place. You probably have more than you can think of in difficult times of a loss. There are services that will video contents of your home for you.
- Better to be safe than sorry - be insured.
- And last - insurance is one of those necessary evils that we can't live with or without - IF you never need it!
